Background

The position is located within the Climate Research and Information Section, Science and Innovation Division, Science, Services and Capacity Development Department in Geneva, Switzerland. Under the direct supervision of the Head of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Secretariat, the incumbent will (a) provide programmatic support to a number of key WCRP activities, currently the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) Core Project, and the Safe Landings and My Climate Risk Lighthouse activities, as well as liaising with the WCRP Academy and (b) provide high-level communications support across WCRP.





Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Secretariat, the incumbent will perform the following duties:



Science Officer, World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) (~ 70%)

(a) Provide overall programmatic support to key World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) activities currently the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) Core Project, and the Safe Landings and My Climate Risk Lighthouse activities, as well as liaising with the WCRP Academy;

(b) Support the development and realization of the WCRP Implementation and future prioritization process;

(c) Work with relevant activities to provide regular budget and funding updates, and provide support to key fund-raising activities;

(d) Provide relevant WCRP inputs to other workstreams across the Climate Research and Information Section and more widely in WMO, including the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW);

(e) Coordinate with the WCRP International Project Offices, as necessary;

(f) Provide line management for short term staff such as interns and temporary staff when needed;

(g) Maintain current knowledge of climate research progress relevant to the WCRP, especially in terms of developing and delivering climate information that is relevant to society;

(h) Represent the WCRP in national and international meetings, as required;

(i) Under the guidance of the Head of WCRP Secretariat, work with the WCRP co-sponsors.



Scientific Communication Strategies and Outreach, World Climate Research Programme (~30%)

(a) Identify, propose and develop information and scientific narratives to enhance the visibility of the activities of the WCRP, and advise on options and techniques for more effective dissemination of relevant messages;

(b) Ensure a consistent branding and messaging for WCRP, for example, with presentations, visualizations, website, social media, etc.;

(c) Design and support the implementation of regular science and innovation e-news and news stories for the web, including liaising with media and communications contacts;

(d) Lead production of communications material for fund-raising activities;

(e) Carry out other relevant duties as required.





Required Skills and Experience

Education: Master's degree or equivalent in Climate Science, Earth System Science, Meteorology, Oceanography, Cryospheric Sciences, Social Science, Communications or a closely related field. A Ph.D would be an advantage.

A first level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of a Master's degree.





Experience:

At least 5 years of combined national and international progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration, communications or related area.
Formal qualification or equivalent experience in science communication, knowledge brokering and stakeholder engagement.

Ability to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate assigned programmes and projects.
Ability to plan, organize and manage the work with minimum supervision.
Ability to draft clear and succinct communication items, reports, and correspondence.
Maturity of judgement, initiative and creativity.
Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Understanding of the United Nations, including WMO programmes and activities and international organization processes would be an advantage.
Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.


Languages:

Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written).
Knowledge of French is desirable.
Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.
(Note: the official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.).

Salary and Allowances

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 71335

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 66912 (in addition to the net base salary)

The position is funded from the regular budget.
